Mammal Monday🐾 - The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was first introduced to the United Kingdom by the Normans in the 12th century as a source of food and for the use of fur. Rabbits can be identified by their long ears and hind legs, grey-brown colouration, and a white, fluffy tail. They are smaller than hares and lack black tips on the ears. 🐇🐰 - Rabbits can be spotted across a variety of habitat and can be seen grazing on tree bark, cereals, and shoots across arable land, grassland and heathland. They can also be seen in deciduous and mixed woodland, to urban areas such as roadside verges and gardens. Areas that provide burrowing opportunities are perfect habitats; rabbits live in large groups in burrows known as warrens. Sexual maturity in does is 3.5 months old and in bucks 4 months old. Breeding seasons occurs from January to August, with a litter of 3-7 young being born monthly. The young are known as kittens and are born with little hair, blind and deaf; eyes open at 10 days old. They are weaned at 21-25 days old 🍃🍂 - Mainly nocturnal, although can be seen during the day in undisturbed areas. Have you seen a rabbit recently? Mammal Monday 🐾 🦊 The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) are a common mammal across the United Kingdom. The reddish-brown coat is a noticeable feature composed of long guard hairs and a soft fine undercoat; the tail is usually white tipped. Size, red foxes are around 90-105cm long and stanf at about 40 cm tall. Adults weigh between 5-7kg. Foxes can be found in a variety of habitats from farmland, woods and have adapted to live alongside humans in urban areas. 🌲🌾🏡 They are omnivorous and opportunistic when it comes to food feeding on anything from birds, frogs, earthworms, berries, fruits to scavenging food waste in bins to pet food. 🍓 Red foxes’ typically mate in winter, which is usually accompanied by barks and screams made by the male (dog) and females (vixen) during the courtship period. After copulation, a gestation period of 7-8 weeks takes place before the vixen gives birth to up to ten cubs; the birth will usually take place in a burrow. Both the male and female will take care of the cubs, the male will provide food for the female whilst she provides milk to the young. The cubs stay in the den for around 5 weeks and will stay with their parents until Autumn once they are fully grown and independent. 🦊 Let us know if you have seen a fox recently! . . . #bbcmammalsociety #mammals #birmingham #blackcountry #photography #photo #committee #conservation #countryfile #instagood #instadaily #hedgehog #deer #badger #wildboar #wildlife #education #conservation #cameratrap #tracking #naturephotography #naturelovers #landscapephotography #redfox #vulpesvulpes #mammals #mammalsofinstagram #wildlifeconservation #mammalconservation
